Kwaj
Jobs Info
I get so many requests for
info about getting a job on Kwaj that the topic deserved its own page.
You can email me if you like, but just about everything I know is on one
of these pages.
Are there any openings?....The
only information the general public would have direct access to would
be in the classified ads in the Kwaj Newspaper..."The Hourglass"
or the individual employers human resource office or website. When looking
at these openings make note of whether they say "contract position"
meaning off island hire (the only option if you don't already live here)
and "accompanied" meaning you can bring your family.
Update in Dec
07: Accompanied positions
are becoming more and more scarce as the range downsizes and tries to
save money. In my own opinion and based on what I saw toward the end of
my last tour, it won't be long before there aren't any families out there
any more. Of course, that could all change after the next election, war
ends, new wars start, etc.
Who are the Employers out there?.....I used to work for
3D Research Corporation, out of Huntsville, AL, who operated the weather
station. The contract was rebid in 06/07 and we lost so we left.
The main employer out here is Kwajalein
Range Services (KRS) and they hire people for all types of jobs; everything
from Physicians to Teachers to Computer Gurus. Check the bottom of this
page for a list of other on island contractors.
Who employs the most people?.....By shear numbers and
diversity of job types, KRS is your best bet to get on this island.
What is it like out there?....Check the other Kwaj pages
for those answers.
What kind of people work out there?.....I, and my entire
family, had to go through thorough physicals to get here. If you need
a doctor a lot you probably can't come out. Otherwise, generally only
nice people can work here :)
How long do people stay out there?.....A typical "tour"
at Kwaj is 2 years, but some people have been here for decades.
Do people get thrown off the island?....Sure. How?.....
Breaking the rules.
Here is a list of the other contractors straight from the phone book as
of December 2007.(NO I cannot give you their local phone number, sorry!).
I have no idea about their hiring practices or whom to contact about jobs
(other than the links already provided) but a quick internet search would
probably turn up something:
- Armed Forces Reserve Training
Center
- Ballistic Missile Defense
Organization (BMDO)
- Betchel Nevada/US Department
of Energy
- Dick Pacific Construction
- Domes International
- Ground-Based Radar Prototype
(GBR-P) (leaving soon)
- Ground-Based Mid-course
Defense (GMD)
- National Imagery & Mapping
Agency (NIMA)

Islands (RMI)
- US Army Corps of Engineers
(COE)

- Kwajalein
Range Services (by far the biggest employer out here)
- Matson Navigation
- MIT - Lincoln Labs
- Northrop Grumman

I hope this helps. Good
Luck!
